Because Burger King, located at the corner of West Alameda and St. Francis, has applied to lease to a 64 foot cell phone tower. The only problem with that is that just a few strides away is the Gonzales Community School, housing K through 8th grades.

FCC specialist Attorney Andrew Campanelli, who represented the “Moms of Merrick” and groups in other communities opposing cell towers, says safety questions persist about cell phone towers, especially near schools.

He said in Bayville, five children who attended school 50 feet from cell antennas on a water tower have been diagnosed with cancer or leukemia and three have died….

PEDIATRICS, Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics (2005), research study concludes,

“Consistent epidemiologic evidence of an association between childhood leukemia and exposure to extremely low frequency (ELF) magnetic fields has led to their classification by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a “possible human carcinogen.” Concerns about the potential vulnerability of children to radio frequency (RF) fields have been raised because of the potentially greater susceptibility of their developing nervous systems; in addition, their brain tissue is more conductive, RF penetration is greater relative to head size, and they will have a longer lifetime of exposure than adults.”

Important regions of the brain necessary for learning, memory and other functions of the mammalian brain were impacted by the microwave radiation, including the hippocampus, cerebellum and frontal lobe, at exposures below the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) safety guidelines….providing new evidence for a potential relationship between everyday cell phone use, wireless transmitters and wireless computer equipment and electrosensitivity symptoms, such as headaches, dizziness and sleep disorders, as well as with tumors, Alzheimer’s and even metabolic effects.

John Wargo, Ph.D., professor of Environmental Risk and Policy at Yale University and lead author of the report, said, “The scientific evidence is sufficiently robust showing that cellular devices pose significant health risks to children and pregnant women.”

Frequent texting means cell phones are often kept in a pocket all day and under a pillow or on a teenager’s bed at night.

Exposures to electromagnetic radiation are increasing most rapidly among the youngest in our society, as service providers focus their advertising on children and educational markets.”

Another school, known for its advanced computer lab, has removed its Wifi, following warnings that the system emits potentially harmful microwave radiation and now hardwires all of its internet connections.

“Schools are in the business of helping children, not hurting them so we shouldn’t be taking chances,” said Principal Brenda Glashan.

Chernobyl radiation caused a spike in bird, human elder and infant mortalities. After Fukushima, a similar spike in infant mortality was observed in Seattle, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Oakland, according to Center for Disease Control numbers. Chernobyl was a single-reactor explosion estimated to have caused one million excess deaths since 1986.

What the Japanese government did do was raise the legal allowable radiation exposures to levels higher than those used for adult male nuclear workers. This when children, especially young girls, are up to seven times more sensitive than adults. Already 30 percent of children in the Fukushima area have nodules on their thyroids—a rate unheard of by doctors.

“Placing cell towers on school property unnecessarily places our children in potential danger and could even be viewed as experimenting with our children’s health. I am strongly committed to stopping these efforts to put cell phone towers on school property.”

Drenner, however, has a background in radiation physics and said she believes the school system didn’t act with necessary caution approving the deal. She has a bachelor’s of science in radiation physics from West Virginia State University and a master’s and a doctorate in environmental science. She also has worked as a radiation safety officer in California and calculated radiation exposure at a uranium enrichment facility in Ohio.

“They should set up a separate task force to monitor the radiation impacts these towers have,” she said.
“I suggest that they not only have a corporate social responsibility but also a corporate social and environment responsibility. We need to know what the company has done to the environment. The companies should disclose this on the internet so that there is transparency,” she added.

“The pacemaker could misinterpret the cellphone signal as a heartbeat and withhold pacing, producing symptoms such as sudden fatigue. The mobile phone must be kept six inches away from pacemaker site and the patient must talk on the phone from the other ear and not the one close to the site,” Dr Jaswal said.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) had recently said talking on cellphone could cause a malignant form of brain Cancer classifying radiation emanating from mobile phones alongside gasoline engine exhaust, lead and DDT as “possibly carcinogenic to humans”.
