Other nations, which include Canada, England, Finland and France, urge consumers to minimize their exposure to cellphone radiation and require telecommunications businesses to pay for independent research to address health concerns. In contrast, the approach in the United States has been to see whether bodies pile up before officials urge any change at all

A funny thing happened on the way to publication of a WHO sponsored study …

Recent revelations that Apple’s iPhone and iPad, Google’s Android and Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 operating systems collect, store and transmit records of users’ physical locations to central databases–secretly, and without consent–have ignited a firestorm over Americans’ privacy rights in an age of hypersurveillance….

“Medical maladies … began when a factory owned by Taiwan’s Wintek, swapped basic rubbing alcohol with the more dangerous toxin n-hexane in the final cleaning process of touch screens to shave off a few seconds off production time. N-hexane is a known toxin and prolonged, high-level exposure can caused nerve damage and a long list of medical problems.”

Several studies of Apple’s production practices undertaken by the Netherlands-based Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations (SOMO) revealed “disturbing allegations of excessive working hours and draconian workplace rules at two major plants in southern China. It has also uncovered an ‘anti-suicide’ pledge that workers at the two plants have been urged to sign, after a series of employee deaths last year,” The Observer reports.

In the International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health2, researchers reported that of 10 epidemiological studies assessing health effects of mobile-phone base stations, eight of the 10 studies reported increased prevalence of adverse neurobehavioral symptoms or cancer in populations living at distances less than 500 meters from base stations.

They conclude that non-ionizing electromagnetic fields (such as cell phone (microwave transmission) are among the fastest growing forms of environmental pollution.

The European Environment Agency executive director warned: “Waiting for high levels of proof before taking action to prevent well-known risks can lead to very high health and economic costs, as it did with asbestos, leaded petrol and smoking.”

A comparison of the relative risk revealed that there were 4.15 times more cases in area A than in the entire population. The study indicated an association between increased incidence of cancer and living in proximity to a cell phone base station. The measured level of RFR, between 0.3 to 0.5 μW/cm2, was far below the thermal guidelines.
